I am a passionate European.
We need new ideas to build a more united and stronger Europe.
My name is Luis Garicano, I am an economist and a Member of the European Parliament for Spain. I am also the Head of the Ciudadanos Delegation at the European Parliament, Vice President and Economics Coordinator of the Renew Group. I am a Professor of Economics and Strategy, on leave of absence at IE Business School. Previously, I was Full Professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and the London School of Economics.
Ciudadanos (Citizens) - Spain's liberal party
In 2015 Spain and Europe were at a crossroads, so I decided to step up and combine my academic activity with politics by helping Ciudadanos, the center liberal party in Spain, make the jump from a Catalonia-only party to a party in Spain. I led the policy areas of economic and social affairs of Ciudadanos and I have been one of the party’s negotiators in government formation talks and budget negotiations. In 2019 I was the leading EU elections candidate of Ciudadanos and since then I am the head of the Ciudadanos’ delegation to the European Parliament.
Member of European Parliament, 9th parliamentary term (2019-2024)
I am Vice President of Renew Europe, the liberal and pro-European political group at the European Parliament. I am a member and Renew Europe’s Coordinator on the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) and substitute member on the Committee on Budgets (BUDG). Renew Europe unites MEPs from the Alliance of Liberal and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), the French delegation of MEPs elected under the Reinassance platform – linked to President Macron’s La Republique En Marche party – and the Romanian coalition of USR and PLUS.
Before politics (and, I hope, after politics) I have been a full time academic. I am currenly on Leave from IE Business School, where I was a Professor of Economics and Strategy. I have also previously been Full Professor of Economics and Strategy at the London School of Economics, and Full Professor of Economics and Strategy at the Booth School of Business of the University of Chicago, and have held visiting positions among others at MIT’s Sloan School and at the London Business School. I am also a Research Fellow at the CEPR.
